Our confidence didn't last long. Our second day is slightly longer, and we get on our bikes feeling yesterday's miles. Over breakfast we find out that a family are staying at our B&B who are also doing a ride from Land's End to John O'Groats - Mum and Dad and two sons. They seem bemused by our loose grasp of geography, and lack of organization relative to them... Needless to say, they're away a good half hour before us.
When we get on the road, we continue along the coast until Newquay, when we swing inland. Our stop at Bodmin for a lunch of petrol station sandwiches makes St. Ives seem like years ago, and by the time we start to get near Tavistock we realise I've underestimated the distance for the day, and that by the end of the day we've done around 70 miles, for what was supposed to be a slightly shorter day. The hills in Cornwall are unrelenting, and have little mercy on us.
Luckily, when we find our B&B outside Tavistock, it's run by two incredibly nice people, one of whom has been celebrating his 30th birthday the night before, but nevertheless offers to drive us into town so that we can get dinner.
Nevertheless, it's a long day, on tired legs, and if our first day was a boost to our confidence, this is a reality check.
